Rights Respecting School Award

In 2017, Ashley High School was successful in achieving the UNICEF Rights Respecting School Award Level 1.

UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) sponsors this award which helps schools to improve pupils' understanding of their rights and put them into practice within school and beyond. In Year 7, our pupils are introduced to the UNCRC (United Nations Convention for the Rights of the Child) and have opportunities to develop their understanding of these rights in all areas of the curriculum throughout their school life. By respecting the rights of others, our students learn how to make informed decisions and become confident, active global citizens.

What does this look like at Ashley High?

Our School Council has adopted Article 12 from the UNCRC as its mission statement:

'Every child has the right to say what they think and have their views listened to'.

School and class councils have focused on working together to discuss and agree Class, Lunchtime and Whole School Charters. In 2018 a Playground Football Charter was also agreed and introduced. All charters are based on the rights of the child and are proudly displayed around school. We are currently working towards achievement of Level 2 Gold Award.
