Art and Textiles

About Us

In the art department of Ashley High School students are taught in a way that helps them to understand the relevance of what they are learning and also gives them the skills needed to stay safe, to enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and have the potential to achieve economic well-being. Students are encouraged to develop creativity and imagination by being offered experiences that are visual, tactile and sensory.

From Year 7 to Year 9 students are taken on a journey through Art and Design studying various times, cultures, art movements, artists, designers and craftspeople and exploring a range of techniques, skills, processes and concepts. Through a range of projects students are encouraged to develop and refine their ideas, fostering their creative awareness and visual understanding. They record their observations in sketchbooks and on design sheets and are then encouraged to produce a personal and meaningful response. All finished pieces and sketchbooks are kept in a personal art portfolio to enable assessment of progression and also to encourage students to have pride and satisfaction in their work.

By using a variety of teaching styles and strategies we ensure that students are clear about what is expected of them enabling all students to reach their full potential and develop skills in art, skills that can be transferred to other subject areas and skills that are needed to deal with the world around them. We aim to provide students with the looking, reasoning and creating skills to enable them to respond with confidence to their view of themselves and the world and in KS4 enable them to follow a course in Creative Media.

We ensure that students' creative achievements are celebrated. As well as praise and encouragement in the form of credits, quick notes and postcards home, work is exhibited around the school.

We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to express themselves creatively, maximise their potential and embrace diversity of ability, culture, gender and experience.
